Japanned Desk

Back to the Portfolio page

A fall front desk circa 1740-1760 of mixed hardwoods, Japanned in a Dutch motif. This desk was originally finished in natural wood tones with a transparent varnish. The Japanning probably dates to 1790-1810.

The desk had suffered severe water damage causing the paint to flake and blanch (cloud). Some passages of the paint decoration were lost. The treatment goals were to preserve the original paint and to compensate for lost decoration. East Point Conservation consolidated the damaged paint and reattached it to the substrate. The losses were filled and carefully inpainted to restore the original design.
